Course dates

This 4 week course runs from on 14th of October to the 4th of November. Wednesday nights, from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

Introduction to watercolour painting!

In this friendly and engaging watercolour course students will work through technical exercises and creative play designed to demystify art-making and develop a personal painting practice.

There will be tutor demonstrations and individual feedback and support throughout each class. The lessons will work through still life, landscape and other forms of representational painting with references to art history.

The class will be limited to only six people due to space constraints.

Course Breakdown

Week 1: Exercises on colour mixing, artists’ palettes and mark making. Discussion of different papers and brushes.

Week 2: Discussion on composition using historical references. Transcription exercises or creation of artwork with particular attention on composition.

Week 3 - 4: Begin painting using a personal reference.

Outcomes

• To develop a new way of seeing to describe the visual world

• To develop an understanding of colour and composition in relation to painting

• To become comfortable and familiar with the materials involved in watercolour painting

What to bring

• A5 or A4 pad of watercolour paper 180gsm of thicker.

• This is a guide only - if you already own watercolours either as a palette or in tubes, just bring what you have. Watercolour paint tubes - Warm and cool of each primary colour + burnt or raw umber. Cadmium yellow deep, lemon yellow, Cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, burnt umber. Optional titanium white. Recommended brands include Holbein, Schmincke, Winsor & Newton and Kuretake Gansai (but again, we can work with what you already own).

• At least 4 soft round brushes of varying size. Kmart or brushes from Officeworks are fine.

• Optional sketchbook, pencils.

These classes are being held in my personal studio. My studio is in Marrickville above a shopfront on Addison Road. Access to my studio is up a STEEP SET OF STAIRS. Access to my studio is only through the rear lane. Please be mindful of this when booking.
